Marjorie Taylor Greene is changing her speed, Nancy Pelosi is giving up her gig, and Nancy Mace is just … losing it.
Who gets to be redeemed and how hard does someone have to work to earn it?
This might be a question traditionally reserved for a priest, but it’s being submitted to the court of public opinion in the curious case of Marjorie Taylor Greene. The infamous representative from Georgia is taking a new approach to media. Appearances on Bill Maher and CNN were just an eyebrow raise in comparison to the shock people felt seeing MTG exchange pleasantries with Joy Behar on The View.
I think the outsized reaction is only because the broader public is being exposed to the congresswoman for the first time in liberal or centrist-coded spaces, in doses fuller than a cherry-picked soundbite. What people are getting wrong is believing that she’s experienced a radical political enlightenment, where the next step would be a complete disavowal of Trump and everything MAGA stands for. (The Jewish space lasers might be out but prosecuting Fauci is still in.)
What makes Greene particularly suited for this political moment isn’t defined by her ideology, but by her approach. Yes, populism is in — and for that reason you can trace a clearer line between MTG and Zohran than you can MTG and Mitch McConnell — but authenticity is the secret sauce.
To her credit, Marjorie has pulled a chair up to historically hostile tables and openly admitted where she’s been wrong, what she’s learned, and how her curiosity continues to propel her evolution. It’s her (and I’m gonna say this word and mean it) humility that’s turning friends like Matt Gaetz into enemies in just three days’ time.
Far be it from me to don a robe and play Christ the Redeemer with the biggest congressional lightning rod in my lifetime. But as speculation about a 2028 run bubbles, public repentance could be Greene’s next step.
RETIREMENT FUN(D)
Pour one out for the greatest to ever do it. Nancy Pelosi, 85, announced in a six-minute video that she will retire from the House of Representatives at the end of this term. She was a true hero to young men everywhere who made bank copying her stock trades for years.
Mike Johnson had nothing nice to say about her, so the Ways and Means Committee fired back: “Talk your shit but even on her worst day, Speaker Pelosi always knew how to count.”
